Growing up in a Jamaican household, I was always drinking tea. Whether it was tea because I had a belly ache or bitter tea we drink to detox our body, tea is just part of the Jamaican culture. Perhaps because Jamaica was and still does report to the British and the Queen. Whatever the reason we Jamaicans and Brits have the love of tea in common. Bigelow Tea offers a variety of teas, that are sure to tickle your fancy and are a great way to battle the cold and flu season. Once I decided this blog post is in order, prompted by my daughter coming down with the flu, I decided to head out to Walmart to get going on this post. Although there were a ton of flavor options to choose from, I decide to go with a classic green tea, as it’s full of good for you antioxidants.

Did you know that you can take ordinary green tea and infuse it with natural herbs to address various symptoms that ail you? Fighting the standard cold can be eased with these helpful tips that build on Bigleow Green Tea.

Infuse green tea with ginger to: Boost the immune system, warming the body and ridding the lungs and sinuses of toxins. Ginger can also aid in clearing congestion and with coughs as it acts as an expectorant and has a warming effect that may help if you’re chilled.

Infuse green tea with peppermint to: Peppermint oil acts as an expectorant and decongestant, and may help clear your respiratory tract. thins mucus, it also soothes sore throats and helps dry coughs as well. Peppermint readies the immune systems to attack foreign bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Peppermint contains compounds that relax the airways and open congested sinuses and nasal passages.

Infuse green tea with thyme to: Relieve chest and respiratory disorders, coughs, colds, and bronchitis. The herb is antibacterial, antifungal and spasmolytic, so it fights agents that cause bronchitis and helps to quell a spasmodic cough. It is also a first-rate expectorant, aiding the body to eliminate accumulated mucus. Use about a teaspoon of leaves in a tea ball. Put the tea ball into a cup, pour freshly boiled water over it, and let it steep for about five minutes. Then remove the tea ball, add a bit of honey to provide further soothing activity—and drink.

At some point or another this cold/flu season we are bound to know someone who will get sick. Perk them up with a get well basket. Include home made chicken soup and mini saltine crackers to make them feel better from the inside out. Also try adding a pretty tea cup and tea towel as well as one or two of the herbs in a pretty glass jar to help them make their own herb infused tea. You can find a tea brewing ball at your local home store such as Bed Bath & Beyond to make the tea brewing process a bit easier.
